Authors "Take On" reviews Anitra Lynn McLeod Day 2

Note: The event will not end on the 7th it will end on the 8th.
This event is open to reviewers and readers

Today we have author Anitra Lynn McLeod!

Is there something specific you look for in a review? If so what?
Gobs and gobs of praise heaped upon my head.  I like to bask in the glow of admiration.  J  Well, yeah, that is nice, but honestly, I look for reviews that sum up the book in such a way as to interest others in reading it.  Even if a reviewer didn’t necessarily like the book, they can present the work so that someone else might pick it up.

If you send your books to a book review blog is there something specific you look for when you’re looking at their blog?
I look for blogs that review books like mine.  I also look for reviewers who post the reviews on Goodreads and/or Amazon.

What types of review do you like best: short or long?
Doesn’t matter.  As long as it’s clear and engaging, I’m happy.

What do you think about spoilers in reviews?
As long as they are marked I don’t mind.

Now, let’s talk about rating systems. On a scale of 1-5 stars, what would be your opinion of the ratings? Starting with the lowest at one first.
1.  OUCH!  This is the bitch-slap from your mother rating.
2.  MEOUCH!  This is a half-ass bitch-slap with a bit of “meh” because the reviewer didn’t totally hate it enough to give it a one star, but they didn’t like much about the book either.
3.  MEH.  This is the lukewarm level.  I call it the “meh” because the reviewer didn’t hate the book, but they weren’t loving it either.
4.  MMMMM!  This is the warm and fuzzy hug rating.  Getting this means the reviewer enjoyed the book and will probably promote the work to friends.
5.  HOT DIGGITY!  This is the orgasmic level.  This is the exclamation you cry when you taste a yummy dessert and then find out it’s calorie free.  This is the review you gorge yourself on and think briefly of sending to the person who gave you the one star.  You would never do such a thing, but the idea does cross your mind.  J

What do you think about sexual ratings?
As long as they are clear, I think they are great.  Not all readers like the same heat level.

What do reviewers do that irks you the most?
Personal attacks on the author.  You can dislike a novel and say so without lambasting the author.

What do you think about awards given to books by a review blogger?
I’m horribly biased here but I love the hell out of them!

As readers/reviewers we love book giveaways. How do you feel about them?
I wish more people understood why authors conduct giveaways.  Yes, we want to make readers happy, but we are also looking for people to read the book and share their opinion.  We do it to gain visibility and sales.

What would be your best piece of advice for a book blogger/reviewer?
Always be constructive in your criticism. Readers won’t trust you if you give everything huge ratings.  Some readers might enjoy snarky reviews, but authors won’t.  Be honest but kind.  There is a huge difference between saying this novel didn’t work for me and saying the author should be tarred and feathered for writing this in the first place.

What's the turnaround time expected when you give a reviewer a book to review?
No expectations.  I always ask for a time frame and work with that.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Um, yeah.  I recently read where an author and several of the author’s friends responded to a negative review by berating the reviewer.  Yikes.  A “bad” review isn’t the kiss of death for a novel.  What one person dislikes, other people might love.  Responding to a harsh review is a total waste of time.  You won’t change their mind about your work, and worse, you’ll look like an ass and turn off other readers.  My suggestion is to print off the review and throw darts at it until you calm down.  Then move the hell on.  Life is too short to walk around with your panties in a bunch.  J

  1. WOW! Thank you for being very open and honest.

"1. OUCH! This is the bitch-slap from your mother rating." Too damn funny - but I like it!

Day Two and another reference to snarky. We may be seeing a pattern here. What a shame that some reviewers feel a need to participate in snarky.

  8. Hmm, I had written a brilliant comment and then it just *poof* disappeared off my screen. I really enjoyed this post. I really try to write constructive reviews. I love what you said about the reviewer writing so that someone else might pick up the book. That is so true. Not everything appeals to everyone equally. I am really enjoying the Authors "Take On" Reviews. Very enlightening.

  10. Thanks all! If anyone wants to use the rating system just let me know. I can offer you low monthly payments on "Anitra's Awesome Rating System" (patent pending.)

I developed the dart board idea when I was on the unpublished contest circuit. I cannot tell you some of the rude, mean, and downright cruel comments my work received. Rather than cry and eat a gallon of ice-cream, I put the comments on my dart board and had at them. BTW I'm very good at darts. ;)

On the flip side, I also had judges who were able to point out mistakes in my work with kindness, humor, and a genuine hope to help me improve. Those are the people you want to dip in gold and keep forever! (er, but for the fact doing so would like, kill them.)

I think most reviewers do try to be fair and give their opinion without undue snark. I think Laurie is very good at this. Case in point: she loved Thief, book one in my Fringe series, but didn't care so much for Overlord. However, the way she wrote the review on Overlord will help readers who love a lot of sexual tension and banter pick up my book. Readers who don't care for that won't. This is actually a good thing in that most who buy my book will probably enjoy it. If not, they can now blame Laurie and not me.

    Just kidding, Laurie! :)

  12. Whatever! They can blame away at least I warned them. If they like that stuff they should be impressed to buy it even more now LOL..

I added your links on the post.

I almost said when I commented before you should charge to do rating systems because you have a talent there. But what most people don't know is that's the kind of fun you add in your books and that's why I really enjoy them.

  13. Thank you for adding the links--Overlord is out tomorrow so I'm excited!

And awwwww, thanks! I love to have some humor mixed up in all the love and stuff! :)

  14. ""This is the orgasmic level. This is the exclamation you cry when you taste a yummy dessert and then find out it’s calorie free.""

I love you so hard for that. Best analogy EVER of the "OMG SQUEE!" reaction to a good review.
