Unholy Pursuits (Unholy Desires, #1)

Darien let his guard down once, and Arianne stole the demon stone from under his nose. Now he has to get it back, no matter what the cost. It doesn't matter that the feisty redhead calms the voices in his head, or that her body tempts him beyond reason. Only the stone will ensure his survival. He decides to appeal to her feminine side and use gentle seduction to get it back. As he begins, something inside him changes and the voices in his head compel him to use pain to heighten desire.

As Darien's touch turns dark, Arianne's lust escalates and a connection forms between them. Yet despite her need, she can't let the sexy FBI agent have what he wants. If placed in the wrong hands, the stone would release an unholy force intent on destroying everything she loves-including Darien.

If only he wasn't so persuasive . . .
Darien is an FBI agent, working for a special unit that is aware of paranormal activity such as Deamhans and portals to Hell. He is determined to cross into Hell to destroy Bathin before he can send any more of his minions to earth to kill humans. Arianne is an Iatros Guard responsible for guarding the portal and protecting Earth from the Deamhans. Arianne has been watching Darien for a year, learning his every move because she knows his plans and she is determined to stop him. Crossing into Hell means death for him and his team. Though she tries, Darien still manages to cross over, unaware he has walked right into a trap.

Six months pass and somehow Darien is able to get back across the portal to Earth, but he has changed. He is now part Deamhan and is struggling to control it. He also stole a very important sword with a magical stone from Bathin and knows he must find a way to destroy it so Bathin will not have the power to cross the portal as well. Arianne wants the sword as well and hopes by finding a way to destroy the stone she can prove to her people she is worthy of her position and not a failure.

When Darien goes after Arianne to get the sword back, things really heat up. He intends to force her to give him the sword and answers to his questions, but soon realizes she soothes his inner Deamhan and both of them enjoy pain with their pleasure. While the story of the stone and Bathin is interesting, I never felt it was the focus of this book. The true focus is on the relationship between Darien and Arianne. Arianne soon realizes they are spirit mates and she is the only one who can help Darien prevent the Deamhan from taking over completely. She is determined to save him and he is determined not to hurt her. I really enjoyed watching their relationship evolve. They discover the magic they release when they have sex may just be the answer to all their problems, even destroying the stone. Why can't steamy, hot sex be the answer to all my problems?

Definitely worth a read, but be warned the sex scenes do involve mutual infliction of pain, in case that is not your thing.
