When she’s sent to a crime scene and finds her second dead woman in as many weeks, half-banshee detective Kiera “Mac” McLoughlin is convinced a serial killer is on the loose. Incubi are extinct, her boss insists. But what else can kill a woman in the throes of pleasure? When her partner is murdered after using witchcraft to locate the killer and Mac is thrown off the case, her frustration turns to desperation.
Certain the killer is an incubus, Mac works behind her department’s back to chase down slim, sometimes perilous leads. While the killer eludes her, she does discover handsome Aidan Byrne, an investigative counterpart from the enigmatic Otherworlder Enforcement Agency. Mac typically runs her investigations fast and hard, but with Aidan at her side, she’s running this one “hot” as well. But Aidan knows more than he’s letting on—something that could shatter their blazing romance and add Mac to the killer’s growing body count…
When I was presented with this novel for review, I was a bit over-zealous because a Banshee is a new entry for me in paranormal romance. But it was premature; the “banshee” doesn’t see much action.
BANSHEE CHARMER is an interesting, easy read and it doesn’t take long to connect the murder dots. Kiera is only half-banshee; so she must rely on her humanity to solve crime. I found it charming that the paranormal unit she works with is referred to as the “freak squad.” Aidan is your typical hunky, take charge hero. Unfortunately, Kiera and Aidan didn’t have the spark necessary for a good romance novel and their characters were too one dimensional for me. I especially lost faith when Kiera – a cop - carelessly trusts an intruder:
Graves snorted. “So you assumed that a man, who had already broken into your home, who had full knowledge about at least two murders, was on the up and up just because he had a convincing badge? What kind of cop are you?”
And I’m not quite sure about the ending. Definitely not a HEA. Maybe a HFN. BANSHEE CHARMER is also listed as urban fantasy; which is not my usual niche and that could be why this didn’t appeal to me very well.
