If you loved Fifty Shades of Grey . . . get ready to enter The Dark Garden.
A deliciously potent tale of one woman’s quest for self-discovery.

Rowan Cassidy likes to be in charge—especially in her personal life. As a mistress at Club Privé, the most exclusive bondage/S & M club on the West Coast, Rowan can live out her dominant fantasies safely, and with complete control—until the night Christian Thorne walks in. Self-confident and sophisticated, he’s a natural dominant if Rowan’s ever seen one. Yet she can’t stop thinking about him and imagining his touch.

Christian has returned home, hoping to break free from his dissatisfaction and malaise—and discovers the cure in Rowan. He’s dying to get his skilled hands on her and watch her surrender, to unlock the mystery of her that captivates him. Determined to be her master, he makes Rowan a daring proposition: give herself over to him for thirty days.

Rowan finds Christian’s offer terrifying—and impossible to resist. But abandoning herself to Christian’s power might be more than she can handle. . . . Or it might be the realization of her true nature and the dark garden within her. There will be only one way to find out. And once the game has begun, there’s no turning back.

A slight BDSM virgin, I was amazed to see how quickly so many good books came out once Fifty paged the way.  The Dark Garden has been receiving amazing reviews everywhere I looked, so I thought it would be a great way to get started.  The story's main character is Rowan, a "top" or dominant who is approached by Christian and asked to give being a submissive a try.  Rowan is instantly attracted to Christian, but doubts he will be able to make her enjoy the role change.

In addition to Rowan and Christian's story we get to meet April, a newbie to the BDSM world and a very deep submissive.  She has been trying to catch the eye of a certain dominant, but isn't sure if once she does if it is a good thing or a bad thing.

The two stories merge and wind together with April and Rowan's friendship.  They share many heart to hearts that helped me to understand the mindset behind both roles.  This attempt at understanding and opening people's eyes was one of my favorite things about the entire book.  Now, I don't want to underscore the amazing sex that both couples get to experience.  Eden Bradley has quite a way with words in that respect.

My only real complaint about the book was the ending.  It came up quickly and ended very abruptly for me.  I would have liked to see the decisions made take a little more "action" and spread out over another couple chapters.  I don't want to discourage anyone from reading these by any means.  I plan on picking up a few of her books in a vampire BDSM series soon.

  2. I recently put this on my wish list since I read a short story by this author and liked it. I will admit I don't really like what Fifty has done to romance because Fifty is not BDSM! Fifty says he is going to do stuff in the book and he never follows through, his relationship is not a Dom and Sub one in the real sense of true erotica. I'm always on the look out for books published before Fifty because those keep true to the BDSM genre more so than Fifty did or the books after Fifty.

THanks for the great review, sorry for my rant.

  4. Not having read Fifty - I can't speak to whether or not it's really BDSM - just that it has made the genre more accepted by the general public. This definitely has the BDSM in it, a a nice look into the reasons why people chose the lifestyle.
