A suspenseful brew with a dash of passion

High Priestess might sound like a ’80s hair band, but its Mona McGregor’s life. She runs the Midnight Magic shop in Goodnight, Virginia, and leads a large coven. She’s also raising two nieces and hasn't been with a man for fifteen years…until a handsome doctor takes an interest in her. But Mona’s life really heats up when Adam Blue, a sexy werewolf, arrives at her door. Adam informs her that someone wants her dead and he is there to protect her. Hell’s bells! When a demon begins stalking her, Mona has to suspect her coven members, and even her family.

With two handsome men and a determined demon after her, Mona teams up with Adam to find out who really wants her dead . . . and who really wants her.

This was an enjoyable read but it was not addicting by any means. The heroine was a bit intriguing and strongly independent but her penchant for self loathing takes away from her character and hence my enjoyment of the book.

She vacillates between something of a genius and then suddenly becomes TSTL at random. The author provides a hero and then proceeds to make him totally inept when it come to protecting or communication for that matter.

The saving grace of this novel is the plot, somebody wants to see Mona dead and Adam means to stop it and the chase and dead ends trying to figure out how to stay alive and WHO is trying to get her killed are done fairly well but most of the mystery and some subplots are telegraphed if you are paying close attention.

The eventual romance works fairly nicely but the heroine self loathing almost kills the book for me. There are several secondary characters that make me think that there may be some better books in this series in the future so I will keep a watch but this one had a lot of unused potential and that always is a sad thing for me as a reader.

This was a hard book to rate, it frustrated me in places, bored me in places and sucked me into the action and mystery in places, very erratic but overall I was glad I read it and hope the next book is a bit more consistent but at the end of it all I was kind of glad, final rating 3 Stars and could have been more with a little effort.
