UNCOMMON PASSION (Uncommon #2)
Genre: Erotic Romance
Length: Novel, 312 pages

After leaving a restrictive religious community, Rachel Hill is on a mission to divest herself of her virginity. Newly independent and struggling to establish herself, she’s not looking for anything complicated. She bids on sexy SWAT officer Ben Harris at a bachelor auction, confident he’ll give her the night of her life and nothing more.
But Ben is jaded and detached, living his life in an endless cycle of danger-fueled adrenaline jags, drinking, and sex. When he misses the fact that his bachelor auction hookup is a virgin, he’s shocked by his obliviousness, and by the risk she took. To make amends, Ben offers Rachel all he can: a no-strings-attached sexual education.
Ben’s lessons introduce Rachel to down and dirty passion, but she’s searching for something more profound than sex, and she’s willing to walk away to find it. Ben can’t get Rachel out of his head, but will he come to terms with his troubled past and learn to love?
Many times readers (and the unknowing general population) believe all erotic romance novels are porn without the pictures. Some I have read would fall into that category, but not UNCOMMON PASSION. This book has plenty of sexual activity between the main characters. P-L-E-N-T-Y! But it is the developing relationship of Ben and Rachel which propels the story forward and the sex becomes a catalyst for their change.
Ben followed her to the door. "Same time next week?" he asked.
She paused in the doorway and looked at him, trying to understand the causes and consequences of desire. He wasn't trying to trap her or second-guess her, or even protect her. All he offered was a chance to experience something intoxicating, radically thrilling. For now, it was enough.
"All right," she said.
From reading the synopsis, I had the impression this book was about a sexually innocent and uneducated woman looking to hook-up, maybe have a good time, learn a bit and call it a night. The typical alpha hero who had a few issues to resolve yada, yada, yada. Yes, I was right on both accounts, but there is so much more to the story!
Ms. Calhoun has written two complex characters whose layers are slowly peeled away as the story develops. Rachel is a strong woman, fighting for her independence and learning to live by her own rules. She is finally learning how to feel! On the other hand, Ben doesn't want to feel, doesn't want "emotions" and does whatever he can not too.
"I can't keep doing this, Ben," she said, gesturing around the hotel room.
He barked out a laugh. "You wanted a man who wouldn't care. I'm that man. Never expect a man to change. What you see the first time is what you'll get the last time."
"How disappointing," she said. How sad. How tragic.
"Lower your expectations."
"I meant for you," she said as gently as he'd been harsh.
When Ben finally admits and faces his fears, it's such a "guy" moment. It's fantabulous!
This book can be read as a standalone, it isn't necessary to read the first book in the series, UNCOMMON PLEASURE. However, that is where Ben Harris makes his first appearance.
If you, Dear Reader, like erotic romance, GO - NOW and buy this book! Ms. Calhoun is now on my auto-buy list. And with these covers, not for my ereader. Oh, hell no!
